On October 14, 1912 former President Theodore Roosevelt was preparing to speak at a "Bull Moose" Party campaign rally when a man approached him with a thirty-two caliber pistol and fired at close range. Despite the bullet lodged in his chest, Roosevelt insisted on delivering his speech. His supporters led him to the podium where he addressed the bewildered crowd for over and hour. After his speech, he was taken to a hospital, and had the bullet removed. Two weeks later Roosevelt was almost fully recovered and back on the campaign trail. Roosevelt's ability to shrug off a bullet wound however, was not enough to win the election.
